Many of his biological descendants discovered this fact after taking an online DNA test. Emmons-Bolling told The New York Times that she found out she was conceived with Dr. Jones' sperm after she was contacted by a woman who claimed to be her half-brother after taking the Ancestry.com test. She said she dealt with a lot of guilt and said that because I took that test, it turned a lot of people's lives upside down.

Dr. Jones' patients were told they would receive a donation from a doctor or a medical student for fertility treatment, Dr. Jones and his legal team argued in previous court cases, "All mothers requested anonymous donations, and all mothers accepted anonymous donations.

However, while it was not illegal for him to use his own sperm on patients in the 1970s and 1980s, his case led to the passage of a law in Colorado in 2020 making it illegal for health care providers to "knowingly use a donor's gametes" without the patient's consent.

The state is now poised to become the first to ban anonymous sperm and egg donation and limit the number of donations per donor, after draft legislation was released last week.

Five other families who believe Dr. Jones used their own sperm in fertility treatments reached out-of-court settlements before the trial, and two other disputes are currently underway.
